1973 Hit 'Free Bird' Ranked 'Most Overrated' Rock Song Ever

Lynyrd Synyrd's "Free Bird" often finds itself atop rankings of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded, but one metric that it's not typically mentioned for is being overrated. The song has cemented itself as a legendary classic rock staple over the years, but many fans believe that it's getting too much praise.

103.7 The Loon ranked "Free Bird" at No. 1 on their list of the most overrated classic rock songs, arguing that it's "far more popular than [it] deserve[s] to be." While nobody can argue that Allen Collins' shrieking guitar solo isn't impressive, does the rest of the song live up to the hype?

"Free Bird" was written by guitarist Allen Collins and lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant as the lead single from the band's debut album. The song was an immediate success, climbing to No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and immediately cementing Lynyrd Skynyrd as one of the fast-rising talents in the classic rock space.

The song received particular attention for its 4-minute-long guitar solo, which was composed and recorded entirely by Allen Collins during the band's rehearsal sessions. The solo serves as an extended outro for the song, turning up the tempo and using three separate guitars to create an electric rhythm that catapults the song towards its conclusion.

In recent decades, "Free Bird" has become an immovable staple of classic rock radio in the United States-perhaps explaining why so many listeners have come to view it as overplayed or overrated. Its lengthy guitar solo and easy-listening choruses make it a perfect driving song, which has kept it in constant rotation for many years.

Guitarist Gary Rossingtonreportedly fought with radio executives over the song's length and extended solo, with the label arguing that it needed to be shorter if radio stations were ever going to pick it up. He was reportedly told that it "needed to be shortened to 3 or 3-1/2 minutes for radio", but he refused, and "Free Bird" was an enormous success anyway.

Today, "Free Bird" is still considered Lynyrd Skynyrd's signature song, and is often performed as the closing track at their live performances. It became the gold standard for exciting, dynamic guitar solos, and one that many artists have strived to recreate in the decades that followed.
