Beloved Comedy That Launched 3 Hollywood Stars Lasted Just One Season

Despite the overwhelming number of available series on streaming platforms, the fact is that creators and producers face a very difficult path to getting their shows picked up by a network.

And that's not even half the battle yet. The next phase is connecting with the audience in hopes of being renewed for another season. It's always hit-or-miss, and more often than not, shows get canceled sooner than anticipated.

This was exactly the case for a now-beloved cult classic that launched the career of three future Hollywood stars. In 1999, Freaks and Geeks premiered on NBC. The network aired just 12 of the 18 episodes before pulling the series from its schedule due to low ratings. It did not take long for NBC to officially cancel the show.

Freaks and Geeks was created by Paul Feig, who would later direct critically acclaimed comedies such as Spy and Bridesmaids. The show was executive-produced by Judd Apatow, the man behind cult classics like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad and Anchorman.

The show is about two differing groups of teenagers navigating high school in a suburban town during the 1980s. Despite its short-lived run, it is among the few comedy series that have a 100% "certified fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

1999 Comedy Launched Hollywood Careers of 3 Future Superstars

Apart from the big names behind the show, Freaks and Geeks also boasts a stellar cast. While people did not know it when the show first aired, this gone-too-soon series ended up serving as a springboard for three future Hollywood stars.

First on the list is Seth Rogen, who played the role of sarcastic high schooler Ken Miller. At the age of 16, this was Rogen's first professional acting role, which he landed after, ironically, dropping out of high school.

Rogen was a pivotal part of the Apatow era. He gained global stardom in 2007 with Knocked Up before starring in a series of box-office comedies. Rogen later took on serious roles in films such as Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans in 2022.

These days, the 44-year-old is dominating the TV space with his hit series The Studio for Apple TV+, which earned him four individual Emmy Awards in 2025 for acting, writing, producing, and directing.

Rogen's longtime friend and collaborator, James Franco, was also on Freaks and Geeks. Before a highly successful comedy career alongside Rogen - and an eventual infamous falling-out - Franco played the role of bad-boy Daniel Desario on Freaks and Geeks.

Franco's biggest achievements include multiple acting nominations and awards for his outstanding performances in the films 127 Hours,James Dean and The Disaster Artist.

Finally, there's Jason Segel, who portrayed aspiring drummer Nick Andopolis on Freaks and Geeks. While he may be best known for his role as Marshall Eriksen on How I Met Your Mother, it was Freaks and Geekswhere Segel made his TV debut.

Segel also had his fair share of Hollywood hits, including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Muppets. He is a co-creator of the Apple TV+ comedy-drama Shrinking, where he stars alongside Harrison Ford.

Apart from the Big 3, Freaks and Geeks also starred Linda Cardellini, Busy Philipps, and Martin Starr, who would go on to become stars in their own right.

Freaks and Geeks is the perfect example of a show that was way ahead of its time.
