22 Years Ago, a Cult Classic Comedy Hit Theaters: Is It the Best Indie Comedy Ever?

Back in the early 2000s, an offbeat comedy surprisingly made quite the impact on American pop culture. Remarkably, on a budget of $400,000, the independent movie grossed roughly $46,118,097 globally, and in its wake, helped to shift the way coming-of-age stories were told. Plus, the film has so many memorable moments and quotes that to this day, if one were to repeat certain phrases, fans would instantly know the reference. Which bears asking the question: Is it the greatest indie comedy ever made? Let's talk about it.

‘Napoleon Dynamite' Hit Theaters on June 11, 2004

Co-written by Jared and Jerusha Hess, Napoleon Dynamite was released in theaters nationwide on June 11, 2004. It's a coming-of-age story that follows the socially awkward Napoleon (Jon Heder) as he navigates adolescence, high school, and a complex family dynamic. He never really goes from "geek" to "Mr. Popularity," as he has no interest in changing to fit in. Although, his little dance number at the end of the movie proves to be a winner among his classmates.

It's also worth noting that Napoleon's journey into adulthood is not one he takes alone. His brother Kip (Aaron Ruell) is along for the ride, despite their tendency to bump heads, his best friend Pedro (Efren Ramirez) is in the thick of it at high school with him, and of course, there's Napoleon's "love interest" Deb (Tina Majorino).

Is ‘Napoleon Dynamite' the Greatest Indie Comedy Ever?

Whenever answering these "greatest" type of questions, it becomes tough to look at things objectively, although I'm going to try. In terms of reviews, it currently has a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a solid score. However, there are a number of independent comedies that have a higher one.

But what it lacks in some positive reviews, it makes up for in cultural impact. The way in which Napoleon Dynamite is told, in some ways, set up a precedent in the early to mid 2000s. That dry, quirky, and "nerdy" comedy that made the movie so special was arguably mimicked in some capacity by movies released later, like Superbad and Hot Rod.

Plus, Napoleon Dynamite has so many memorable moments that countless millennials alone can recall. I already brought up his dance moves for the talent show, but what about that whole tater tot exchange between Napoleon and his bully, Randy (Bracken Johnson)? Then, there's Kip's pursuit of LaFawnduh (Shondrella Avery).

Oh, and the quotes. Who can forget lines like, "Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day," or "Tina, you fat lard, come get some dinner"? (By the way, Tina is Napoleon's llama.)

I also have to point out that Napoleon Dynamite led to pop culture apparel. How many people did you know who had shirts with Napoleon's face on them or just the phrase "Vote Pedro"?

With all that being said, my only hesitation with crowning Napoleon Dynamite as the best indie comedy ever is the fact that My Big Fat Greek Wedding also classifies as an indie comedy. And the latter was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globes, has sequels, and the box-office take-home absolutely crushes Napoleon Dynamite? But what do you?

Napoleon Dynamite is streaming on Hulu, Disney+, and Prime Video.
