Netflix Appears to Cancel Show After Just 1 Season

Earlier this week, What's on Netflix reported Formula 1: Drive to Survive was coming back for a ninth season.

While Netflix hasn't officially confirmed the news, multiple people connected to the crew listing season 9 as 'current' on their online profiles, having been working on a new season since the beginning of the year," What's on Netflix reported.

As Netflix continues with the hit series, it's reportedly moving on from what it hoped would be a hit with a new audience.

What Is F1: The Academy?

Produced by Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine, F1: The Academy was designed to shine a light on the all-female racing tier. The docuseries initially debuted in May 2025, but there hasn't been much chatter regarding the show ever since.

"The seven-part series offers unprecedented access to the adrenaline, grit, and emotional turmoil on race day, and everything that leads up to it," Netflix describes of the series. "At the center of it all is Susie Wolff, a former professional driver and now managing director of F1 Academy."

"In 2014, Wolff was the first woman in 22 years to participate in a Formula 1 weekend, and remains one of the most respected people in motorsport. Wolff now leads the new stable of drivers with a rare blend of strategic vision and firsthand experience."

Is 'F1: The Academy' Over?

What's on Netflix posited that the series is likely over after failing to deliver significant ratings.

"In fact, throughout 2025, the series pulled in 6M hours watched, equating to 1.4M views. That's compared against the 89.4M hours season 7 delivered, equating to 12.3M views," What's on Netflix wrote.

"While we have confirmed that some prep work took place for a second season (and a few fans reportedly spotted film crews in early races during the 2025 season), we have a lot of doubt about the series future."

While it's not the official word, it certainly sounds like the show won't be coming back for a second season.
