Fleetwood Mac's 'Dreams' Back on Billboard Chart 49 Years After Its Debut

Is there a better breakup song than "Dreams"? Fleetwood Mac's hit single from its chart-topping magnum opus, Rumours, "Dreams" was penned and sung by Stevie Nicks. Nicks wrote the song in 10 minutes about the collapse of her relationship with guitarist and vocalist Lindsey Buckingham (although their relationship wasn't the only one on the rocks during the recording of Rumours).

After its release on March 24, 1977 (with the equally iconic "Songbird" as the B-side), "Dreams" set a record for the legendary rock band that they haven't topped to this day. It peaked at No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on June 18, where it reigned in the top spot for one week. It's Fleetwood Mac's only song to hit No. 1 on said chart.

The masterful tune is having a musical resurgence this week-"Dreams" sits at No. 4 on Billboard's Rock Streaming Songs chart. It's not the only Fleetwood Mac song climbing the Billboard charts, either. "Landslide," from the band's self-titled 1975 album, is currently at No. 22 on the Rock Streaming Songs chart, whereas it's clocking in at No. 6 on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart. Meanwhile, Rumours is sitting pretty at No. 3 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart, with only folk-pop artist Noah Kahan ranking above them with two albums.

In 2020, "Dreams" skyrocketed back into the zeitgeist when it was used in a viral TikTok featuring TikToker Nathan Apodaca drinking Ocean Spray cranberry juice while skateboarding to work and lip-syncing to the song. The tune returned to the US Billboard Hot 100 that year for the first time since 1977.

"Dreams" is ranked on numerous best-of lists, including Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list. In 2021, the publication ranked the track at No. 9. The Guardian slotted it in at No. 1 on its list of Fleetwood Mac's greatest songs.
