'House of the Dragon' Season 3 Trailer Breakdown: Plot Points To Expect From the Book
Warning: Spoilers ahead for House of the Dragon and Fire & Blood
If Season 2 of House of the Dragon was the calm (mostly), Season 3 will be the storm. HBO unveiled the final trailer for the third season of the highly anticipated Game of Thronesprequel. The Dance of the Dragons is now in full swing, and the trailer advertises a handful of crucial plot points from George R.R. Martin's Targaryen compendium Fire & Blood.
For starters, the season seems to confirm it's doing away with Nettles as a character by giving her storyline to Rhaena Targaryen. We see Sheepstealer soaring above the Gullet in the trailer's opening minutes, and it's safe to assume that Rhaena is on his back.
Rhaenyra Targaryen also officially seizes King's Landing, which is a real narrative pivot for Team Black in the book. The "Queen of Bastards" writing on the wall in Westeros' capital foreshadows the smallfolk inevitably turning against Rhaenyra as their ruler. In the source material, they eventually call her "King Maegor with teats" after Maegor the Cruel.
The Battle of the Gullet is also heavily showcased in the House of the Dragon trailer, which pits Lord Corlys Velaryon's massive fleet against Sharako Lohar's Triarchy forces. The final shot sees Jace Velaryon astride his dragon, Vermax, flying above burning ships during the bloodiest sea battle in Westerosi history. This is presumably the moment right before his death. There's also a sequence in which someone wakes Rhaenyra. She looks surprised, indicating that this is when she learns about her son's death.
Meanwhile, Daemon Targaryen is mostly by Rhaenyra's side in the Season 3 trailer. In one moment, Mysaria trails them, looking uncomfortable. This could foreshadow Daemon and Mysaria rekindling their fling. While it doesn't drive a wedge between Rhaenyra and Daemon in the book, since the creatives are scrapping Nettles, they could tweak this story beat for dramatic flair.
Alicent Hightower warns Aemond Targaryen about Team Black advancing upon King's Landing, which sets up his arc at Harrenhal. Alicent, Helaena Targaryen, and her daughter, Jaehaera Targaryen, are seen moving through King's Landing in a bid to escape; however, they're eventually held captive in the Red Keep by Rhaenyra in the book. Alicent's brother, Gwayne Hightower, dies by Ser Luthor Largent's hand, and there's a scene in the trailer of Gwayne fighting someone. You do the math. Then, a shot of Helaena in tears could signal the moment before she falls to her death, or perhaps it's in reaction to Otto Hightower's beheading courtesy of Rhaenyra.
Another scene sees Vhagar burning people inside Harrenhal right before Aemond slices someone up. This is when he puts all of House Strong to the sword (RIP, Ser Simon Strong).
In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, Aemond gifts Alys Rivers a dragon egg, which hints at their affair. In Fire & Blood, Aemond spares Alys during his Harrenhal execution blitz, and they become bedmates. She eventually becomes pregnant with his child.
The glimpses of Roddy the Ruin with the Winter Wolves and Black Aly are exciting, hinting at their role in Team Black. House of the Dragon continues to tease Team Green MVP Daeron Targaryen with another appearance from Tessarion the Blue Queen, sitting among the Hightower host as Lord Ormund Hightower marches ahead.
One of the most exciting shots in the trailer is of a dragon breathing fire as it emerges from a cave. This could be Sunfyre, King Aegon II Targaryen's dragon, who's presumed dead after Season 2's Battle at Rook's Rest. After that conflict, he hid in the caves of Crackclaw Point, so this seems to make the most sense.
