Natalie Alyn Lind Says Joining 'Dutton Ranch' Is a Dream Come True: 'I Didn't Want to Mess up Yellowstone' (Exclusive)

Natalie Alyn Lind is in the middle of a horror movie. The breakout actress, who plays Oreana Jackson on Dutton Ranch, is busy as hell, currently filming a new film she produced called Halloween Store, which, as she enthusiastically describes, is exactly what it sounds like: "It's about a bunch of kids that are trapped in a Halloween store on Halloween night with a serial killer on the loose." Although 25-years-old, Lind gives the feeling of being an old soul. She talks about being "nostalgic" for the movies from the '90s or early 2000s, and being excited to make a movie of her own. "I didn't have Barbie dolls," she says with a laugh. "I had Michael Myers dolls."

Right now, before her film is complete, fans of the Yellowstone world are seeing a lot of Lind in Dutton Ranch. Episode 4, "Start With a Bullet," puts Oreana front and center in the action, as her budding romance with Carter (Finn Little) becomes a bigger part of the show's unfolding drama. And, even though Lind is a fresh face in the Yellowstone mythos, she's been a working actress for a huge portion of her life; from her child star days in shows like One Tree Hill to big roles in Gotham, The Gifted, Tell Me a Story, and Big Sky, Lind was already working extremely hard, even before the Dutton Ranch came calling.

And as that new show-possibly the most popular show on the planet right now-heats up, Lind talked to Men's Journal about what she loves about Dutton Ranch, her deep-rooted Yellowstone fandom, and why the Texas heat took some getting used to.

Let's talk about how you approached playing this character. How did you craft Oreana?

I was such a fan of the original Yellowstone. I think that coming into this show, there are very few roles, especially for females, that just feel so powerful and are not afraid to walk into a room and just create dominance and be very just out there and eccentric. And for me, it was just very important that everything that Oreana does comes from a very deep-rooted space, and she's not just crazy.

Everything that she does feels very intentional. She has a huge heart, and she has been mistreated a lot in her life and has had this kind of interesting upbringing. It's really fun to play a character that has so many levels and is just very strong-minded.

As a big Yellowstone fan, were you daunted at all by joining this world?

Oh my gosh, I mean, definitely! This entire universe is just incredible. I have been a fan of all of the prequels and the original for years. So when this show came up, just as a fan, I was excited that they were finally showing Beth and Rip's family, and their inner circle, and who they are as people. So, I was just happy to take a meeting on it at all. I am so happy to see the fan reactions because there is that kind of intimidating feeling of not wanting to mess up the original. I didn't want to mess up Yellowstone. It's completely changed my life.

What makes Dutton Ranch different from Yellowstone?

It feels so different than the original Yellowstone - mostly because of the Texas setting - but it keeps all the same morals, and it has all the same through lines that I think people fell in love with from the beginning. I'm from Los Angeles, and I'm half Canadian, so the heat was the biggest thing for me to get over.

So, do you like Texas now?

I'm obsessed with Texas! I was not expecting to like it as much as I did. But the heat. So, we were filming that scene at the rodeo in the first episode, and I think my call time was like 10:00 PM, and we filmed until 5:00 in the morning. And at 3:30 in the morning, it was 94 degrees, and I was sweating so much. I went through three pairs of jean shorts - I was drenched. But after that was able to adjust to the heat aspect of Texas, it's just such an incredible space. The hospitality is amazing. The food, the bars, the shopping, everything.

You've had a pretty big career, but you said earlier that Dutton Ranch has changed your life? Why is this job so different from previous roles?

I've played characters for years that have felt out of this world. I mean, I was a comic book character in Gotham. I was a superhero. I've been kidnapped. Every character that I've played has felt kind of out of this world. I've played a country singer. So, for this, it's interesting because I feel like all of these storylines and characters feel very authentic and real, and the circumstances are out of this world, but it all feels so deeply rooted.

I think that's why people fell in love with the original [Yellowstone] so much. These characters are so relatable. With Oreana, she is somebody that I want everybody to relate with, even though their circumstances might not be the same. You might not be from a millionaire family in Texas with Annette Bening as your grandmother, but when people watch the show, I want them to have a warm feeling. I like that as a viewer, to feel like I can know the character. And, I think as we go into the season more, that's going to expand even more.

I think in the Taylor Sheridan universe, he has a reputation for being able to create characters that are female, empowered, badass, not afraid to say what they're thinking. Being able to be part of that and being able to be seen as a powerful woman on screen, it's so incredible.

Why do you think Westerns have made such a huge comeback?

Taylor [Sheridan] modernized the cowboy culture. And I think that cowboy culture is so interesting because you see all of these people who genuinely work so hard. And for us, as actors, we started off in cowboy camp, and we had such a deep understanding for just horses and cowboys and the hard work that goes into it. It's an understanding of the land and just trying to show a different perspective on life. It is also super sexy as well! I think that cowboys have this kind of reputation as hardworking men. There's nothing better than that. And I think that that kind of makes women swoon.

It's that women want to be with them and men want to be them. I mean, it's also the fashion. There are so many different parts of our show that are not just the cowboy aspect to it, but it's like that Southern, rich kind of feeling.
