Merle Haggard's 'Mama Tried' Ranked Among ‘Best Country Songs of All Time'

Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" was ranked No. 9 on Rolling Stone's most recent listing of the 200 Greatest Country Songs of All Time. Written in 1968, the song remains a timeless classic that demonstrates the lasting power of the country genre.

"Mama Tried" was released as the first single from Haggard's 1968 album of the same name, which became a defining record in his career. The song peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and remained there for four weeks, making it Haggard's biggest commercial success at the time.

The Heartbreaking True Story Behind 'Mama Tried'

In 1957, Haggard was convicted of robbery and incarcerated in San Quentin. He served three years in prison, and it's this experience that he draws inspiration from for the lyrics of "Mama Tried".

In the song, Haggard (through the form of a non-biographical narrator) expresses remorse for his past and focuses on the pain and suffering that he caused his mother by landing himself in prison.

While there are clear narrative differences between Haggard's experiences and the story told in the song (Haggard was never sentenced to "life without parole", for example), it's clear that "Mama Tried" is a very personal song on many levels.

The lyrics of "Mama Tried" discuss how the narrator falls into a criminal lifestyle despite his mother's best attempts to keep him grounded and abide the law. He writes: ""In spite of all my Sunday learning, towards the bad I kept on turning/'Til mama couldn't hold me anymore."

The chorus recounts: "No one could steer me right but Mama tried," expressing Haggard's regret over the pain that he caused his mother by denying her attempts to help him. As he admits at the end of the chorus, this leaves only himself to blame for his incarceration.

It's a very intimate and fragile story that proves why Haggard is such a timeless and inspirational songwriter. It may not directly be about his own experiences, but there's a clear spirit in the lyrics that comes from direct experience and touches anybody who's listening.

"Mama Tried" won the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999, and was selected in 2016 for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its long-lasting impact over country music. Haggard would die just two weeks later.
