Can a flu shot protect Georgia residents from the current quad-demic? Here’s what to know
Record-breaking amounts of illnesses are plaguing the U.S. right now, and Georgia is among the hardest hit areas.
Illnesses like the flu, RSV, norovirus and COVID are making the rounds and Georgians are a sick bunch of folks. While you can vaccinate against some ailments, you may have to let the others run their course.
With the numbers on the rise of these four illnesses, experts have dubbed this moment a “quad-emic.” The term “quad-demic” is used to describe a situation where four different respiratory illnesses are circulating simultaneously, significantly impacting public health and straining healthcare systems.
Why is it called a “quad-demic?”
Increased Viral Activity: Health experts have noted a concerning uptick in cases for all four viruses, with reports indicating that norovirus cases are at their highest level since 2012 and RSV hospitalizations have surged significantly
Seasonal Factors: The winter season tends to lead to more indoor gatherings, which increases the likelihood of virus transmission. Holiday celebrations and travel further contributed to this spike in infection.
Public Health Concerns: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other health officials have warned that these illnesses tend to rise simultaneously, creating a challenging public health environment. This situation is prompting some regions to reinstate mask mandates and encourage vaccinations against flu and COVID-1.
Mitigation Strategies: Experts recommend vaccination, good hygiene practices and masking in crowded settings as effective measures to combat the “quad-demic’s” impact on public health.
The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) suggests that the severity of symptoms and high transmission rates indicate that circulating viruses may be particularly virulent and have most likely undergone genetic changes that make them more effective at evading immune responses.
How can you protect yourself from the “quad-demic?”
Get Vaccinated
- COVID-19 and flu vaccines: Ensure you are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations and receive your annual flu shot.
- RSV Vaccination: If you are in a high-risk group (such as older adults or pregnant individuals), consider getting the RSV vaccine.
Other methods of prevention
Wash your hands frequently. Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Use hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
Avoid touching your face.
Cover your coughs and sneezes.
Wear a mask.
Utilize rapid testing.
Disinfect surfaces.
Increase ventilation by opening windows and doors.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a magic shot that will keep you safe from all the illnesses in the “quad-demic.” But, there are still ways to protect yourself during the peak of sickness season.
