Is it legal to hang accessories on your rear view mirror? What Georgia law allows
A tassel from your graduation year, a cross from your church or an air freshener with your favorite scent.
There are so many options to accessorize your rear view mirror, but are they all legal?
Here’s what Georgia law says.
Is it legal to hang items from your rear view mirror?
If you have an air freshener or car charm, it is okay to hang from your rear view mirror as long as it doesn’t break the mirror or distract you from the road.
However, a law enforcement officer can pull you over if the item is big enough to obstruct your view from the road or too distracting.
Obstruction of view driving laws
While it isn’t illegal to hang items on your rear view mirror, there are certain rules you have to know.
If any item on your rear view mirror affects your visibility as a driver, you may be breaking the law.
Georgia law states: “No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any sign, poster, or other nontransparent material upon the front windshield, side windows, rear windows of such vehicle which obstructs the driver’s clear view of the highway or any intersecting highway.”
If you have items that cause your driving view to be obstructed, you could be a danger to yourself and others on the road.
Leave the bling at home. If you have sparkling disco balls (yes, they do exist) or diamond-studded anything, law enforcement could count them as too distracting for drivers. Even small items may be too distracting or move into view when looking for oncoming traffic.
