Middle GA teams look to keep up momentum in 2nd round of GHSA football playoffs

It was a great first round GHSA football playoff performance for Middle Georgia schools last weekend, with eight of 12 teams across Bibb, Houston, Peach, Jones and Monroe counties advancing to round two.

There were some dominant performances of note. Peach County crushed Savannah 45-0 in their 3A match. Westside also refused to allow a point to their 3A opponent Windsor Forest, defeating that team 14-0.

In the 5A matchups Warner Robins remained undefeated, beating South Effingham 30-17, and Jones County beat Griffin 32-8.

In the 6A playoffs, Northside squeaked out a 24-21 victory on the road at Brunswick High School and, in the 4A playoffs, Mary Person blanked Carver 27-0.

The local A-Private matchup between First Presbyterian and Tattnall Square ended with FPD advancing to the next round with a 49-28 victory. Stratford is the lone local team that enjoyed a bye in the first round of the playoffs and will begin its state championship journey this week.

Mount de Sales, Howard, and Southwest also had their playoff runs ended as they came up short in their first round matchups.

A-Private

Stratford vs. Fellowship Christian

Last meeting: It was a 56-6 victory for Stratford in 2004.

First Presbyterian Day vs. Athens Academy

Time/Site: 7:30 p.m. Athens Academy

Record: FPD 8-3 (4-1)

Series record: 0-2

Last meeting: FPD was defeated by Athens 42-21 in 2011.

Class 3A

Peach County vs. Pierce County

Time/Site: 8 p.m. Peach County

Record: 10-1 (6-0)

Series record: 1-0

Last meeting: Peach defeated Pierce 43-15 in their only other meeting in 2012.

Westside at Liberty County

Time/Site: 7:30 p.m. Liberty County

Record: 8-3 (5-1)

Series record: 0-0

Last meeting: This is the first matchup between the two schools.

Class 4A

Mary Persons vs. Baldwin

Time/Site: TBA. Mary Persons

Record: 9-2 (5-0)

Series record: 8-2

Last meeting: Mary Persons defeated Baldwin 37-3 in 2015.

Class 5A

Warner Robins vs. Eagles Landing

Time/Site: 7:30 p.m. Warner Robins

Record: 10-0 (4-0)

Series record: 3-0

Last meeting: Warner Robins claimed a 52-14 victory in 2005.

Jones County vs. Wayne County

Time/Site: TBA. Wayne County

Record: 10-1 (7-1)

Series record: 2-7

Last meeting: Jones recorded one of its two victories over Wayne last season 39-15.

Class 6A

Northside vs. Tucker

Time/Site: 7:30 p.m. Tucker

Record: 8-3 (2-2)

Series record: 2-2

Last meeting: Last season Tucker defeated Northside 22-7 in a semifinal matchup.
