Twiggs County, Macon County in good shape for postseason
In Class 1A public, the only teams that qualify automatically are region champions. The rest of the 24-team field is filled out through a power rating formula. The field was expanded this season, with the top eight seeds getting a bye into the second round.
Listed by each team is power rating points and overall record.
Safe
3. Twiggs County (7-2, 13.69)
Twiggs County heads to Greene County with a shot at picking up the top at-large seed and a first-round bye. Even with a loss, there’s a good chance the Cobras will have next week off before opening playoff action at home in the second round.
4. Macon County (7-2, 13.66)
Macon County is in a similar position as that of Twiggs County, except the Bulldogs travel to No. 2 Manchester on Friday for the Region 4-1A championship game. A win there and a Mount Zion-Carrollton loss to Fellowship Christian in the Region 6-1A title game could give Macon County the top overall seed.
9. Taylor County (8-1, 12.69)
Taylor County, whose only loss this season came against Macon County, travels to Brookstone for a crossover game. A win puts the Vikings in contention for a first-round bye, while a first-round home game isn’t a guarantee should they lose.
Likely in
19. Dooly County (5-4, 11.65)
A win at Marion County locks up a playoff spot, while a loss puts the Bobcats on the bubble. They currently lead No. 25 Trion by 0.97, so a lot would have to break against Dooly County to knock the Bobcats out.
Outside looking in
28. Crawford County (4-4, 9.76)
The Eagles head to Greenville on Friday needing a win and lots of help to make the playoffs for the first time since 1998. Crawford County is currently 1.24 points behind No. 24 Telfair County, and the Eagles won’t get much help in terms of second-level power points from one-win Greenville.
33. Hawkinsville (3-6, 8.97)
Everything would have to break perfectly for Hawkinsville to even come close to overcoming the 1.93-point gap with Telfair County. The Red Devils are at Pacelli on Friday.
Out
Wilkinson County (39th, 1-7, 7.75), Hancock Central (40th, 2-5, 7.61).
