Fromm has high hopes after Corky Kell performance
It’s not very often a team goes 1-3 in pool play, enters tournament play as a 26th seed out of 30 teams and ends up playing for a championship.
Houston County did just that Friday at the Corky Kell 7-on-7 tournament in Roswell, and quarterback and Georgia commitment Jake Fromm was a big part of those efforts.
“We know 7-on-7 is a roller coaster and all about making plays,” Fromm said. “Sometimes you get hot, and then sometimes things don’t go our way. We understand that and did the best we could to not stay in the lows very long. We got behind each other, and it’s always next guy up.”
Houston County’s low point came when it lost to McEachern, Norcross and Cherokee early on in pool play. But a victory over Mays was just enough to sneak into the back end of the bracket and have an opportunity to play for a championship in the offseason tournament.
The Bears beat powerhouses Alpharetta, Collins Hill and Roswell before losing in the final game to Colquitt County. Against Roswell Fromm completed all but one pass, but he credited the win to his teammates.
“That’s just the way it goes sometimes,” Fromm said. “You get hot and get the ball to your playmakers. I couldn’t have done it without my guys making plays for me.”
Overall, Fromm thought highly of the Corky Kell tournament, appreciating the atmosphere and excitement around the event.
“It wasn’t anything about Houston County vs. Northside, but it certainly had its big-time atmosphere,” Fromm said. “Playing in the championship game against Colquitt County was really exciting.”
Fromm’s Houston County team beat Northside last season, marking the Bears’ first-ever win over the Eagles. Fromm expects even more out of his team this season.
“Honestly, I believe this is the year,” Fromm said. “We have the talent and the work ethic to really make a great run.”
After going after that elusive state title in his senior season, Fromm hopes to produce some of that same success at Georgia. He is scheduled to enroll in January.
“I can’t wait to be there and help any way I can and compete for the quarterback job,” Fromm said. “I couldn’t be more thankful for the way things worked out for me and fell perfectly into place. (Georgia head coach Kirby) Smart is doing amazing things in Athens. The sky is the limit, and God’s plan is amazing.”
