Woman charged in death of friend run over by car

Bibb County grand jurors voted to indict a Macon woman Tuesday in the December death of a friend who was run over as the two tried to push a car out of a patch of grass and mud.

Mary Elizabeth Wade, 19, is charged with three counts of first-degree vehicular homicide and one count each of driving under the influence while under 21, driving under the influence — less safe, and reckless driving, according to an indictment filed in Bibb County Superior Court.

Authorities said Wade and 18-year-old Murray Nixon, also of Macon, were trying to move the car after it got stuck at Emmanuel Baptist Church on Foster Road in north Macon.

Wade, who’d been driving, had driven off the parking lot and into a grassy area, according to a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The 2009 BMW 325i rolled back onto Nixon as the women tried to push it, according to the sheriff’s office.

Tuesday’s indictment alleges that Wade’s blood alcohol concentration was .02 grams or more within three hours of driving.

It also alleges that Wade acted recklessly in placing the car in neutral while on a wet slope and then taking her foot off the brake, causing it to roll back and hit Nixon.

A special presentment bench warrant will be issued for Wade’s arrest.
