Macon man indicted in bystander’s shooting death; charges dismissed against second suspect

Bibb County grand jurors indicted a Macon man Tuesday in the shooting death of a bystander injured when two men fired shots at each other following an argument.

Quintavious Hutchings, 23, who has been held at the county jail since his March 18 arrest, is charged with felony murder in the death of Tarus Fair, 24, according to the indictment filed in Bibb County Superior Court.

A second man, 42-year-old Tony Ellis, initially charged with murder in Fair’s death, was released from jail Tuesday after the charges against him were dismissed, according to jail records.

Witnesses and evidence supported Ellis’ claims that he’d fired in self-defense, according to the Bibb County District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities have said Hutchings and Ellis fired shots at each other about 11:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Cynthia Avenue, not far from the intersection of Broadway and Eisenhower Parkway.

Fair was struck by a bullet and died at a hospital after being dropped off there by an unknown person.

Jail records show Hutchings is being held without bond.
