Russell Parkway reopens after gas leak

Russell Parkway is back open after a gas leak forced the closure of a section of the roadway Thursday afternoon, police say.

Russell Parkway had been blocked in both directions from Tallulah Trail to Burns Drive for about an hour, according to Warner Robins police Tweets.

Wednesday afternoon, eastbound lanes of Russell Parkway were shut down near Bank of America for a couple of hours because of a gas leak, police said.

A contractor installing fiber optic phone lines accidentally hit the gas lines, causing the leaks, according to Bill Meeks, gas supervisor for the city of Warner Robins.

The location of one gas line was marked correctly by the city, and the other was not, Meeks said.

The contractor has been asked to physically check the marks, as required by law, and ask for the city for help if a mark cannot be located, Meeks said.
