Houston County sheriff’s Capt. Jon Holland isn’t thrilled about a telephone scam that invokes his name.
The scam, which has been around before, is recirculating in Houston County.
Victims are told they’ve missed jury duty and they can avoid a pending arrest warrant if they’ll wire some money.
“We just want people to know that it’s started up again and not to fall for that phone scam,” Holland said Tuesday.
Never miss a local story.
The scammers identify themselves as either Holland, who heads up the sheriff’s criminal investigation division, or as two fictitious employees of the sheriff’s office: Chief Deputy Kevin Oakley and Sgt. Kal Stewart.
The scammers also leave a callback number of 470-588-3185 which includes extensions.
Holland said those who get the calls should not give out any personal information and hang up.
The sheriff’s office also has posted a warning about the scam on its Facebook page. Houston County residents who’ve been scammed should call the sheriff’s office at 478-542-2080, or 478-542-2085.
