Gregg Allman cancels tour dates due to ‘serious health issues’

Gregg Allman, of the legendary Allman Brothers Band, announced Friday that he has canceled tour dates through October due to “serious health issues,” a release said.

The singer is currently under care with his doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

The health issue will result in 28 tour dates being canceled. Allman’s next scheduled performance was Thursday in Scranton, Pennsylvania, at the Peach Music Festival. Cancellations will also include sets at the KABOO Festival in Del Mar, California, and Allman’s own Laid Back Festival in Morrison, Colorado.

Allman is scheduled to make a return to the stage on Oct. 29 during the Laid Back Festival’s stop in Atlanta.

“I want to thank my fans and friends for supporting me while I rest up and focus on getting better and back on the road as soon as I can,” Allman said in a statement. “I’ve been working hard with my band, my pride and joy, to play our music for everyone. We’ll see y’all in October.”

This is not the first time health problems have plagued Allman. He was diagnosed with hepatitis C in 2007 and received a liver transplant in 2010. Allman canceled several tour dates the following year on his doctor’s orders after a upper respiratory condition developed related to the transplant.

Chuck Leavell, former member of the Allman Brothers Band in the 1970s, was sorry to hear about his friend and former band mate’s health. The musician did not know any specific information regarding Allman’s health, but said he was concerned for his friend.

“We’re very good friends and it’s always disheartening to hear of him having any problems,” Leavell said. “If it’s true I hope they’re minimal.”

The Allman Brothers Band formed in 1969 and members headquartered themselves in Macon. The group was extremely popular in the early ‘70s but dissolved in 1976, a few years after the death of original band member Duane Allman.

Gregg Allman last performed in Macon in May during Mercer University’s graduation ceremonies. Before then, Allman released a live album in 2015 from his performance at the Grand Opera House in Macon in 2014.
