Allen holds off political mainstay DeFore for commission seat

A familiar face will be representing the Macon-Bibb County Commission’s District 6 after Joe Allen won Tuesday’s runoff against political mainstay Ed DeFore.

Throughout the race, Allen referred to DeFore as an idol, but he said it was time for someone who could lead the district in the future. DeFore has served on the Macon City Council or Macon-Bibb County Commission since 1971.

DeFore received 168 votes, or 32 percent, to Allen’s 388 votes, or 68 percent, according to final, unofficial results.

The 84-year-old DeFore congratulated Allen on his win.

“I just wish him the best with everything,” he said. “I’m thankful I could serve the people of Macon and Bibb County for all these years.”

In the May election that led to the runoff, Allen drew about 49 percent of the vote, falling just short of an outright win, while DeFore had 41 percent. The third candidate in that election, former Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency Director Don Druitt, backed Allen in the runoff.

For Allen, the victory was bittersweet, since it came against a man he said he admires.

“I know I can’t take office until January. I want to get with (commissioners) and be a team player with them, but I want stuff in District 6 to be taken care of,” Allen said.

Allen’s latest stint as a county commissioner will begin in January. The Kids Yule Love founder served on the Bibb County Commission from 1989-2000 and 2005-2013.

Allen campaigned on improving storm-water systems throughout the county as well as addressing blight, including dirt roads in the district that spans west and south Bibb County, including Lizella. He has also said he wants to see money dedicated to improving the Lake Tobesofkee Recreation Area.

During campaigning, DeFore touted his experience working for the community, especially for children through recreation centers, parks and various programs.

“I’m just thankful so much to be a part of this administration and help see our kids and boys to grow up with Little League and help them get scholarships,” he said.
