Man found shot dead at Macon motel

A man was found shot dead in front of the Econo Lodge on Riverside Drive on Sunday afternoon, said Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.

He said paramedics were called to the scene at about 3:30 p.m. The victim had a gunshot wound to the torso. Jones said he had no further information though he added that this is the 15th homicide of the year in the county, which is well ahead of the pace for the 30 homicides of 2017.

The victim is a 38-year-old black male from Macon. His name is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.

Sgt. Clay Williams, spokesman for the sheriff's office, said the call came in as shots fired. When deputies arrived they found the man lying in the motel driveway. He had been shot in the back, Williams said. A suspect has not been identified.
