Laurens County working to clear main roads after Irma
Tropical Storm Irma took down trees across Laurens County, like in other parts of Middle Georgia.
Don Bryant, with the county’s Emergency Management Agency, said trees fell on several structures, and one person had to be taken to the hospital after a tree came down on their vehicle. At one point, several thousand residents were without power.
Officials are trying to clear all the main roads so people will have access to emergency facilities if needed. However, they must wait on the power companies to clear lines on multiple roadways.
“When it gets dark, we’re probably going to suspend some of that operation till morning, but we’re going to go as far as we can as long as we have daylight”" Bryant said.
As of 6 p.m., a lot of people were still using the county’s shelters. The shelters have power, and they will be open Monday night as well, he said.
