Thousands without power in Crawford County

By Monday evening, Topical Storm Irma had cut power from 3,200 homes in Crawford County.

Rick Sharon, the county’s Emergency Management Agency director, didn’t expect electricity to be restored anytime soon, since it’s still too dangerous for power company workers to be out in the storm.

Downed trees and power lines were scattered across the county, but no injuries have been reported. Trees fell on two homes, Sharon said. Crawford County Sheriff Lewis Walker said a tree fell on the department’s investigative building, but it’s not serious.

“We just got a lot of power outages, trees on some of the roads still, and now the state is starting to move out,” Walker said. “The secondary roads, the county and volunteer fire department has been helping clear those today.”

The county has been directing people impacted by the storm to nearby shelters.

“We were preparing for this, we were bracing for it,” Sharon said.
