Children saved four puppies that were left to die in a closed plastic box with no air holes, according to the Macon-Bibb Animal Welfare department.

The puppies were found Saturday night in the area of Houston Avenue and Cynthia Drive, said Cson Johnson, assistant director of animal welfare.

The puppies were about 4 weeks old and were “badly overheated” when the children found them and took them home. Their parents then called 911.

Bibb County sheriff’s deputy Dustin Mobbs was first on the scene and took the puppies to his precinct to cool off until an animal welfare officer arrived to pick them up.

“Whoever put them there, their intent was clear,” Johnson said.

By Sunday night one of the puppies had died, and the other three were in stable condition. Johnson said it’s not unusual for people to leave puppies in closed boxes to die.

The case is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to called Animal Welfare at 478-621-6791 or send a message on Facebook.
