Man indicted on vehicular homicide charge from police chase
A man was indicted Tuesday on a charge of vehicular homicide in the traffic death of a man during a police chase in Houston County.
A grand jury indicted Vernon Jerome Gibson, 40, on a total of 13 counts, including numerous traffic charges, in the death of Bruce Snyder, 66.
On Nov. 6 Gibson allegedly ran a traffic light on Carl Vinson Parkway at Leverette Road while being chased by a Houston County deputy. Gibson allegedly broadsided Snyder’s vehicle, as well as striking another vehicle, then jumped out of the car and ran away. Snyder was seriously injured and died Nov. 25 at the Medical Center, Navicent Health in Macon.
In his obituary, Snyder was described as a husband, father, Sunday School teacher and a retired, longtime civilian worker at Robins Air Force Base.
Gibson was arrested two days after the accident. He was on probation at the time of the accident after serving prison time for fleeing law enforcement in 2015.
Gibson previously served time in prison for a 1998 robbery by intimidation in Peach County, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections website.
Other charges in the indictment include leaving the scene of an accident, serious injury by vehicle, two counts of hit and run, criminal attempt to commit a felony, reckless driving, speeding, disregarding a traffic control device, failure to report and accident, driving without a license, and driving with improper registration.
