Macon transit authority CEO resigns

Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority CEO and General Manager Rick Jones has resigned.

The transit authority’s board of directors announced Jones resignation Friday afternoon. The authority will immediately start searching for a new CEO and general manager, the statement said.

“It is with regret that the Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority announces the resignation of General Manager and CEO, Richard Jones,” the statement said. “Mr. Jones resigned Tuesday June 20th to pursue other interests. Mr. Jones was hired by the Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority in 2009 with 30 plus years of transit experience. The authority is grateful for the time Mr. Jones spent with MTA and wish the best for him in the future.”

Jones’s resignation came the same day as county commissioners discussed having more control over the local transit system. Several commissioners said they planned to have discussions about having the system become a Macon-Bibb government department. The County Commission would need state legislators to approve the change.

Jones had worked closely with Mayor Robert Reichert on initiatives that included applying for grants to purchase electric buses.
