The long-awaited Macon-Bibb County Senior Citizens Center project is on the County Commission agenda.

The Operations and Finance Committee will likely vote whether a $2.23 million construction agreement for a new center will move forward to the full commission. If approved, it would take about nine months for contractor Warren Associates Inc. to build the Central City Park center.

The agreement’s cost is slightly under the $2.3 million remaining in the budget for the project, which includes $1.6 million in SPLOST funding and another $700,000 from the sale of the current Adams Street center near Mercer University.

The project has been several years in the making, as different locations were scouted before a consensus was reached on Central City Park.

There were objections from some seniors about some of the plans being downsized because of costs. The County Commission formed a senior center ad hoc committee that focused on pushing the project forward.

A potential second phase for the senior center is on the list of projects in the 2018 SPLOST.
