Five Macon lawyers nominated for judgeship

Two additional Macon lawyers have been nominated to fill the judgeship vacancy created by the retirement of Macon Judicial Circuit Chief Judge Martha Christian.

Jeffrey Monroe, a partner at Macon’s Jones, Cork & Miller law firm, and John P. Cole, a Macon State College vice president and attorney, join G. Morris Carr, Philip T. Raymond III and Thomas David Mann on the list for consideration by the Judicial Nomination Commission.

The deadline for nominations was 5 p.m. Monday.

Nominated attorneys will be interviewed by the commission, a group of 20 attorneys appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal to fill judicial vacancies.

Deal will then use recommendations from the commission and conduct an additional round of interviews before appointing the circuit’s next judge.

The Macon Judicial Circuit includes Bibb, Crawford and Peach counties.

In September, Christian announced her plan to retire from the bench at the end of 2011.
