For now, Macon will have to wait to see 'I, Tonya'
A movie filmed in Middle Georgia this year recently premiered in New York and Los Angeles, but it could be as late as mid January before the movie is shown in Macon.
“I, Tonya,” a biopic on disgraced Olympic ice skater Tonya Harding, premiered in select theaters Friday following a few special screenings in major cities.
In February, the cast and production crew filmed scenes at the Macon Coliseum and hired several folks from the midstate to play extras.
Benjamin Stevens, manager of Macon’s Amstar 16 Cinemas, said Friday he was uncertain of when the theater would start screening the movie.
“We all wanted to see it,” Stevens said, adding that it’s corporation makes such decisions about which movies the theater screens and when.
Screenings are expecting to expand to more cities through January, according to a report from USA Today.
The movie focuses on Harding, who in 1994 pleaded guilty to hindering the investigation into her competitor Nancy Kerrigan’s attack, was stripped of her medals and banned for life from competitive skating in the U.S. The investigation found that Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, had hired a hit man to attack Kerrigan.
