Fireworks, history and music highlight Independence Day events in Middle Georgia

Although July 4 falls on a Tuesday, Middle Georgians have the opportunity to begin celebrating this weekend.

Independence Day serves to commemorate the birth of this nation and all it has accomplished since that time. There are many celebrations throughout Middle Georgia beginning as early as Friday night.

Warner Robins will kick-off the fun with its 35th annual Independence Day Celebration on Friday night. The city will host the event at McConnell-Talbert Stadium starting at 6 p.m. Live music and vendors will be accompanied by a fireworks show, according to Mandy Stella, executive assistant to the City of Warner Robins.

The free event will include musical performances from Montgomery Gentry, trailblazers of contemporary country music, and Mary Kate Farmer, Georgia Country’s 2016 Female Artist of the Year.

The whole community is invited for a night of fun. There will be a kids zone available that will include inflatables and other activities.

“The Independence Day Celebration is an event that people not only in Warner Robins look forward, to but people all over the state,” Stella said. “We look forward to another packed house event where people come out to enjoy the great food, awesome music and the best fireworks show around.”

Before Sparks Over the Park lights up the night sky at Lake Tobesofkee at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Macon will begin its Fourth of July fun with a concert by Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill, 112 and others at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Macon Coliseum.

Tickets range from $34-$79. VIP packages are available for $129, which includes a pre-party, drinks, appetizers and a meet and greet session.

Jon B and Dru Hill will be featured as well, making it an event you don’t want to miss.

“It’s rare you see these acts together, all with No. 1 singles. It will be a great night of music to see all these performers all in one night,” said Tyler Gambrell, director of marketing for the Macon Centreplex.

Jarrell Plantation will host its Independence Day Celebration from 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday. Visitors can watch demonstrations of old-fashioned skills and chores, participate in crafts and activities, eat fresh barbecue and play outdoor games, in addition to hearing a reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Tickets are $6.50 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 for youth and free for children 5 and younger.

The event aims to provide guests with a sense of what life was like around the time the Declaration of Independence was signed, according to Christina Orr, interpretative ranger for the plantation.

There are several more Independence Day events happening across the midstate, including Smiley’s Fourth of July Celebration on Saturday, the Star Spangled Concert at the Museum of Aviation on Sunday, Fourth of July at Fort Hawkins on Tuesday, and a celebration all day Tuesday at Lane Southern Orchards.
