Ron Seibel: Close games make for good times
High school football players of Middle Georgia, y’all have done a good job of keeping me entertained.
Thanks. And keep up the good work.
In the past four weeks, the games I’ve covered have wound up with the following scenarios: double-overtime, one point, three points and overtime. Games don’t get much closer than that.
As Telegraph sports editor Daniel Shirley put it last week on Twitter, “Middle Georgia fans, it looks like ifa one-point loss to Howard and an overtime setback against Westside, with both games boiling down to field-goal attempts. If you haven’t seen senior quarterback Derrick Evans or his teammates play, they are a fun group to watch. It’s not a stretch to say that this Central team might be the best Chargers squad to take the field in nearly two decades.
Southwest also matched its 2-2 start from a year ago, but the Patriots are putting a bunch of points on the scoreboard. Yes, Southwest has a freshman playing quarterback in Jordan Slocum, but things seem to be clicking so far. I haven’t seen them play in person yet, but indications are the Patriots will have a say in which four teams from Region 2-AAA make the postseason.
Bibb County football programs, except for Westside, have encountered many more years of struggle than years of success. But if the first half of the season has been any indication, this season could get quite interesting.
It already has been entertaining.
