Perfection is hard to achieve
Keeping that zero to the right of the hyphen in your team’s record isn’t an easy thing to do.
A lot has to go your way. There must be talent, skill and depth on the roster. Injuries must be avoided. Penalties and turnovers must be kept to a minimum. A lucky bounce and breaks in the schedule help, as well.
Still, with just three weeks remaining in the regular season, 28 teams in the GHSA are unbeaten.
Which teams are trying to preserve that unblemished record? Here’s a look by class at the teams that are unbeaten heading into this weekend’s games.
CLASS AAAAAA
Rush Propst is working his magic again at Colquitt County. His Packers team is just one of three teams in the GHSA’s largest classification (a number that will go down one this weekend) that remains perfect, sitting at 8-0 on a bye week. Games against teams with winning records -- Tift County and Camden County -- remain, although both have struggled against Region 1-AAAAAA competition.
Also: Grayson (Region 8-AAAAAA, 8-0) and Dacula (Region 8-AAAAAA, 7-0).
CLASS AAAAA
Perennial Middle Georgia playoff nemesis Ware County is one of four unbeaten teams in Class AAAAA. The Gators (7-0) don’t have a standout opponent the rest of the way and have a good shot at reaching the playoffs with a 10-0 mark. The good news for Region 2-AAAAA teams? The way the playoff brackets are constructed this season, none of those teams will have to face Ware County until at least the quarterfinals.
Also: Allatoona (Region 5-AAAAA, 8-0), Kell (Region 7B-AAAAA, 7-0) and Lanier-Sugar Hill (Region 8-AAAAA, 7-0).
CLASS AAAA
Griffin, last year’s Class AAAA champion, is 7-0 and on a 22-game winning streak. Griffin, one of three unbeatens in Class AAAA, should enter its Region 4-AAAA crossover game with an unbeaten record, with several teams at 5-2 and 4-3 competing for the spot opposite Griffin in that contest.
Also: Sandy Creek (Region 5-AAAA, 7-0) and Buford (Region 8-AAAA, 7-0).
CLASS AAA
Heading into this weekend, a pair of Middle Georgia teams, Westside and Peach County, were on track to face off in a battle of unbeatens. Westside was 7-0 heading into Thursday’s game against Spencer, while Peach County is 8-0 going into Friday’s game against Jordan.
Two other Middle Georgia programs are undefeated in Class AAA. Top-ranked Washington County is 7-0 with 5-2 Hephzibah still on the schedule, while Dodge County is 7-0 heading into Friday’s game against 6-2 Cook.
Also: Blessed Trinity (Region 4B-AAA, 7-0), Central-Carrollton (Region 5-AAA, 7-0), Calhoun (Region 6-AAA, 7-0) and the Region 8-AAA trio of Jefferson (8-0), Hart County (7-0) and Oconee County (7-0).
CLASS AA
Vidalia (7-0) took control of the Region 2-AA race last week with a 35-28 win over Benedictine. The Indians have another important game Friday when they host Bacon County (4-3, 3-1 region).
Also: Screven County (Region 3-AA, 8-0), Greater Atlanta Christian (Region 6-AA, 7-0).
CLASS A
Tattnall Square (7-0) will close the regular season at 7-0 Aquinas in the Region 7-A championship game should both teams win their final two sub-region contests.
Also: Calvary Day (Region 3A-A, 7-0), Marion County (Region 4-A, 7-0) and Mount Paran Christian (Region 6A-A, 7-0).
