Mercer women fall in home opener

The Mercer women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday in its home opener, dropping a 3-0 decision to Oklahoma State.

Cristina Mursuli had seven saves in the first complete game of her Mercer career. Oklahoma State had a 22-3 advantage in shots and a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal.

“I was very proud of our team’s effort (Sunday),” Mercer head coach Tony Economopoulos said. “It was a hot day against a very good Big 12 opponent, Oklahoma State. I’m pretty sure they’ll be in the NCAA Tournament this year. We asked our team to come out with a lot of energy and effort, and I thought we displayed that for 90 minutes. We defended very well.

“Unfortunately for us, they got a couple of breaks and got a couple easy goals, and that’s the difference in the match. Overall, I think we played them much better this year than we did last year. We’re starting to gel and play at a high level.”

Mercer (1-1) travels to Kennesaw State on Friday.
