Former Mercer star Lewis suffers knee injury
Former Mercer baseball standout Kyle Lewis suffered a knee injury in a minor league game Tuesday and is out for the season.
Bob Dutton, the Seattle Mariners beat writer for the The News Tribune in Washington tweeted Wednesday, “#Mariners CF prospect Kyle Lewis (Short-A Everett) out for season and maybe longer. Exam showed bad knee injury.”
The team confirmed Lewis’ status in a news release that Lewis suffered a torn ACL and a torn medial and lateral meniscus in his right knee. Lewis was injured Tuesday on a play at the plate in the game between the Everett AquaSox and the Tri-City Dust Devils. Lewis was drafted by Seattle with the 11th pick in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft in June.
He finished his standout career at Mercer this season, being named the Southern Conference Player of the Year for the second straight year. He also was named the Golden Spikes Award winner as the top player in the nation.
Lewis was batting .299 with 26 runs scored, eight doubles, five triples, three home runs and 26 RBI for the AquaSox in the Northwest League.
