Mercer’s women’s soccer team keeps streak going in overtime
Freshman Logan Culver scored the winning goal in overtime Sunday as Mercer knocked off UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference play.
After 90 minutes of scoreless play, Haley McDuffee drove the ball down the left side of the field in the fourth minute of overtime and sent a short pass to Culver. Culver dribbled for just a few seconds before firing off a shot from outside the box, which sailed to the back right corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Mercer has won five straight games to improve to 8-8-1 overall and 5-3 in conference play. UNC Greensboro, which didn’t have a shot on goal, dropped to 6-9-2 and 3-3-1.
“I’m really proud of our entire team’s effort (Sunday),” Mercer head coach Tony Economopoulos said. “To come out of the weekend with two big victories this late in the conference season is a huge testament to how far they’ve come. We’re on a bit of a streak now; we’re happy, and we hope that continues. Overall, I was proud of everyone’s effort (Sunday). We really had a great game plan, and the players executed it. I felt we created a lot of chances in front of goal and one finally went in for us.
“Credit to Logan Culver, a freshman, for stepping up in overtime and burying a great shot. It was an overall team effort (Sunday). We look forward to our final conference game at The Citadel, and hopefully we can keep the streak going.”
Mercer travels to Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday to face The Citadel.
