Briefs: Vine Ingle loses state tournament opener

Vine Ingle might get win without playing

Vine Ingle had an interesting day at the Little League 10-11 state baseball tournament.

Columbus Northern scored nine runs in the sixth inning for a 17-4 win over Vine Ingle, which then waited to see what happened in the Belvedere-Oconee game.

Belvedere had only 10 players in uniform Saturday, but two were apparently ejected in the 10-0 loss to Oconee. If those players have to sit out a game and Belvedere doesn’t have enough players, it may have to forfeit the scheduled Sunday game with Vine Ingle.

If Vine Ingle wins by forfeit, its next game would be at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.

Mercer-FGCU team falls in The Basketball Tournament

A team made up of former Mercer and Florida Gulf Coast men’s basketball players lost to 97-87 Queen City/VIP in the first round of The Basketball Tournament on Saturday at Clayton State.

Made up of players who were part of the Mercer and Florida Gulf Coast NCAA tournament teams, Bracket Busters was an entry in a national tournament that will pay $1 million to the winning team.

Former Florida Gulf Coast player Sherwood Brown led Bracket Busters with 28 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Mercer product Langston Hall added 17 points.

Georgia pair named to Nagurski list

Georgia senior Jordan Jenkins and junior Leonard Floyd have been named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List for being considered as candidates for the national defensive player of the year.

Floyd, a 6-foot-4, 231-pound linebacker from Dodge County, topped Georgia with six sacks last year and was fifth on the team with 55 tackles.

Also primarily lining up at outside linebacker, Floyd had 8.5 tackles for loss, 17 pressures and three forced fumbles in his second season with the Bulldogs.

Jenkins, a 6-3, 253-pound linebacker from Hamilton, is the Bulldogs’ top returning tackler from his outside linebacker position with 70 stops in 2014. He finished with 9.5 tackles for loss and five sacks to go along with a team-high 24 quarterback pressures. In addition, Jenkins forced two fumbles and recovered another pair last season.

Former Bulldog and longtime NFL standout Champ Bailey won the 1998 Nagurski Trophy.
