Russell Henley finished his opening round on a high point at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington.

Henley finished the day at 1-over par after a birdie on the 18th hole. He stands six shots behind leaders Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson at around 5:30 p.m.

Henley birdied the par-3 3rd hole to move to 1 under for his round, but he gave shots back with a bogeys on Nos. 7 and 9. He birdied the 10th and 12th holes to get back to 1 under. But bogeys on Nos. 13, 14 and 16 sent him back down the leaderboard to 2 over.

He opened with two pars and followed the birdie on No. 3 with three pars.

The tournament comes five years after Henley's major championship debut at Pebble Beach. He finished tied for 16th at the 2010 U.S. Open.
