Recap: Lochte rolls, Phelps falters

The Telegraph’s recap of the first day of the London Olympics.

Lochte’s landslide: In the highly anticipated first showdown between American swimmers Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps, Lochte cruised to an easy victory in the 400-meter individual medley while Phelps missed out on the podium altogether. Lochte has now won seven Olympic medals, four of which are gold. Phelps was denied his 17th career Olympic medal, and he still sits two away from tying the all-time Olympic medal record of 18.

Clutch shot: Italian Mauro Nespoli scored a perfect 10 points on the final shot of competition to push the Italians past the United States, 219-218, and earn the gold medal. The Americans settled for the silver medal, giving Team USA its first medal of the Olympics. The U.S. team upset two-time defending champion South Korea in the semifinals to advance to the final match.

Flipping ahead: The American men’s gymnastics team finished first after the qualifying stage for the team competition. The Americans finished with a score of 275.342, with Russia, Great Britain, Germany, Japan and China following. The U.S. team will be seeking its first team gold medal since 1984 while the finals get underway on Monday.

Championship return: Americans Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh began their quest for a third straight gold medal in beach volleyball with a 21-18, 21-19 win over Australians Natalie Cook and Tasmin Hinchley. The duo has never lost a set in Olympic competition. Fellow Americans Sean Rosenthal and Jake Gibb also won their opening match in men’s beach volleyball.
