UPDATE: Hanson leads Mickelson at the Masters
AUGUSTA -- Phil Mickelson played an amazing back nine at Augusta National Golf Club, but he still trails Swede Peter Hanson by a shot after three rounds of the Masters.
Mickelson made birdies on Nos. 10 and 12 before making a 25-foot eagle putt on No. 13. He hit a brilliant flop shot on No. 15 and finished it off with a birdie putt to get to 7 under. He closed within a shot of Hanson with a birdie on No. 18 to get to 8 under.
Playing in his second Masters, Hanson made five birdies on the back nine to get to 9 under with a 7-under-par 65 round. Hanson stuck his approach on No. 18 to a foot and tapped it in for birdie.
Louis Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open champion, is in third place at 7 under. The South African made three straight birdies on the front nine, and added one at No. 12 to get to 7 under. He moved to 8 under with a birdie on No. 17, but bogeyed the final hole to finish at 7 under.
Bubba Watson is in fourth place at 6 under following a birdie on No. 18.
Matt Kuchar, a former Georgia Tech star, birdied Nos. 4 and 7 to move into a tie for the lead, but his birdie on No. 9 pushed him out in front by himself at 6 under. The birdie on No. 4 came when he holed out from a bunker. Kuchar fell a shot off the pace, however, with bogeys on Nos. 13 and 16. Kuchar is in fifth at 5 under.
Eight different players held at least a share of the lead at some point in the third round.
