Mayhem's Shawn Skelly receives SPHL weekly honor
Two goals and one assist from Shawn Skelly not only helped the Macon Mayhem clinch a playoff spot, it also earned the Mayhem right winger the SPHL's Player of the Week award, the team announced Tuesday.
Skelly's effort came in a 4-1 win at Columbus. That victory assured the Mayhem of their postseason berth in their first year in the SPHL.
Skelly finished the season with 28 goals and 35 assists for 63 points. He's currently second in the SPHL scoring race. He's tied for the league lead with seven game-winning goals and eight power play goals. He also has taken the most shots in the league with 251.
This is the fourth time a Mayhem player has been recognized with the Easton Player of the Week award. Goaltender Garrett Bartus twice won the honor, and goaltender Curtis Martinu won it once.
The Mayhem are off until next week's playoff opener. According to a report by the Peoria Journal-Star, should Macon meet first-place Peoria in the first round, the Mayhem would host Game 1 of the best-of-three series April 13 at the Macon Coliseum, with Game 2 taking place April 15 at Peoria's Owens Center, a public rink that seats less than 1,000. Game 3, if necessary, would take place April 16, also at the Owens Center.
Carver Arena, the regular home arena for the Rivermen, is unavailable during the first two rounds of the playoffs because of other events.
