Macon comes up short in Columbus
Two Columbus players had two-goal nights as the Cottonmouths beat the Macon Mayehm 4-2 Saturday in SPHL action.
Matt Robertson, appearing in his fifth game for the Mayhem, opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period. It was his first goal of the season.
Ben O'Quinn gave Columbus the lead with a pair of second-period goals, the first at 9:51 and second at 16:21.
Robertson tied the game with his second goal of the game at 8:56 of the third period. But the tie didn't last long as Shawn Bates scored just 37 seconds later to give Columbus a 3-2 lead. Bates completed the scoring with Mayhem goaltender Garrett Bartus on the bench in favor of an extra attacker. Bates scored into the empty net with just six seconds left.
The Mayhem will play their fifth straight road game Thursday at Fayetteville.
On Friday, Corey Banfield had two goals and an assist and John Clelow had three assists as the Pensacola Ice Flyers downed the visiting Macon Mayhem 4-1 in Pensacola on Friday.
The Ice Flyers outshot the Mayhem 18-5 in the first period but a strong performance by goaltender Garrett Bartus kept the Mayhem on even terms in a scoreless period.
