Rams not satisfied with last year’s title
Covenant’s football team isn’t satisfied with the 2015 season even if it went a perfect 13-0 and won a state championship in the GICAA.
Now transitioning to the 2016 season, the Rams want to prove that they can dominate once again and repeat. But that will be difficult now with the departure of last year’s star senior running back Khristian Tate, who rushed for 2,078 yards and 32 touchdowns last season.
But head coach Chris Oxford believes that senior running back Leon Simmons is the player who will fill that void.
“I believe that Leon will do amazing things for us this season,” Oxford said.
Simmons, already a contributor to the team’s success his junior year, has taken a big step forward this offseason as he recovers from an injury suffered last year. But Oxford said Simmons has recovered from that injury.
“Leon is at full strength, healthy and ready to go,” Oxford said.
Simmons is not the only player who is expected to make an impact after suffering an injury last season. Middle linebacker Michael Alston and junior quarterback Cody Farr were both injured last season. Like Simmons, they are expected to have a big impact, especially Farr, who has not thrown a single interception the past two seasons.
The championship experience last year has done wonders for Covenant’s underclassmen, who are led by Chaz Ferguson, Tyler Mixon, Andrew Adams and Will Doll.
