Area high school players sign with colleges
The long signing period had a busy week, with Middle Georgia high school athletes signing on dotted lines for colleges.
Two high schools in Houston County in particular had a full week of signings, and Middle Georgia State picked up area players in three sports.
Five Northside athletes gathered to sign papers Friday.
Justin Alonso was a two-sport standout with the Eagles, but he will play soccer at Middle Georgia State. Alonso started for four years and was a captain for three, scoring 37 goals to go with three assists, earning All-Middle Georgia honors twice.
Four-year softball letterwinner and two-time Golden Glove winner Taylor Sheffield signed with Andrew.
LaGrange is the destination of football player Jesse Weber, whose brother Arlie is at LaGrange.
Toccoa Falls will get another Northside baseball player, with infielder Eric Felch following former Eagles players Justin Key and Jordan Coulliard.
Three-year baseball starter Jake Adams is also bound for Middle Georgia State. Adams pitched and played outfield, earning all-region honors, and joins former teammate Tyler Flood in Cochran.
A pair of Veterans volleyball players will stay teammates.
Madison Purse and Cameron Roby each signed Thursday with Point, in West Point, near the Alabama line. The pair helped the young Warhawks program become a playoff team the past few seasons.
A Jones County trio of football players had signing ceremonies Friday.
Third-team All-Middle Georgia running back Chandler Ramage will continue his career at Reinhardt, while fullback Dan Curry is going to LaGrange. Defensive lineman/linebacker D'Kel Lowe signed with Methodist, a Division III program in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Titus Benjamin, a multi-sport athlete from Treutlen, signed Wednesday to play basketball at Middle Georgia State.
Benjamin is a 6-4 forward who helped Treutlen to three straight GHSA Region 3-A championships and consecutive Final Four appearances. He averaged 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists last season.
A pair of Bleckley County cross country and track standouts will remain teammates. Austin Cook and Anuj Patel signed this week with Clayton State, where they will compete in both sports.
