FPD’s Watson defends state shot put title
Robby Watson defended his state shot put title, and the FPD senior was joined by several others as state champions after the first day of action at the GHSA boys track and field meet in Jefferson.
FPD teammate Josh Miller, Stratford’s Quintez Cephus, Fitzgerald’s Chandler Eckler, Hancock Central’s Ladarus Lundy and Montgomery County’s Malik Linder all stood atop the medals stand as champions.
Watson won the Class A private shot with a throw of 53-7 ½, and was second in the discus, his heave of 164-4, eight inches behind Landmark Christian’s Drew Anderson, and 21 feet ahead of the third-place finisher.
Miller was first in the pole vault for the Vikings.
Cephus, the Wisconsin football signee, captured the Class A private triple jump title by a few inches.
Eckler won the Class AA pole vault, topping Bleckley County’s Will Simmons by six inches.
Lundy won the Class A public triple jump, with teammate Teondrick Shorter taking fourth.
Linder captured the Class A public long jump, edging Twiggs County’s Robert Cornelius.
Peach County is in ninth place in Class AAA with 11 points, not far behind first-place Jefferson’s 18.
Vidalia is second in Class AA, eight points behind leader Early County. Eighth-place Fitzgerald has 18.5 points.
FPD is in second in Class A private with 28 points, Landmark Christian taking some control with 44 points. Stratford is sixth with 16.
Treutlen is among three area teams in the Class A public top 10, at third with 18 points. Twiggs County is fourth with 16 and Montgomery County fifth with 14.
