Hawkinsville’s David Daniell stepping away from football

After four seasons and a state championship, Hawkinsville football head coach David Daniell is stepping aside.

Daniell, who went 31-16 and led the Red Devils to the 2014 GHSA Class A Public championship, has resigned from his football duties. He will remain with the Pulaski County School District as its director of operations, supervising maintenance, facilities and transportation.

“It’s a new challenge for me,” Daniell said. “It’s something I’ve looked forward to. I felt it was the right thing to do at this time.”

Daniell steps aside after leading Hawkinsville through spring practice. A new head coach has not been named.

Hawkinsville went 5-5 last season, finishing 21st in the power rating and missing the playoffs. The Red Devils’ previous head coach, Cam Black, also had a four-year run in the position.

After a 4-6 season in 2012, Daniell lead Hawkinsville to a 9-4 record and a Class A Public semifinal appearance in 2013 and a 13-1 mark in 2014.

“This was my 27th year of spring practice; I did it a long time,” Daniell said. “There were a lot of things I missed (with my family), and I look forward to spending time doing more of those things.”
