Houston County is finding the baseball postseason at home equally as satisfying as Veterans is finding road trips.

The Bears swept Statesboro in a tough series to open the GHSA Class AAAAA tournament, then battled Cambridge for three games before surviving this week.

Houston County, which didn't make it out of region tournament play last year, now welcomes Columbus, which took two on the road at Allatoona, 9-7 and 3-2.

And expect another superb series Tuesday on Highway 96. The Blue Devils won three straight Class AAA state titles from 2010-12 and are 25-6 and winners of six of their past seven. Maxpreps named Columbus the No. 13 high school baseball dynasty in the nation in 2014. The Blue Devils are coached by Chad Mathis a 1994 graduate of Peach County.

Several area teams were eliminated in the second round.

Region 2-AAAA champ West Laurens was knocked off at home by St. Pius X, 6-5 and 8-4.

Washington County lost in three games to Franklin County while Peach County fell in two games to Ringgold in Class AAA.

In Class AA, Jeff Davis lost in two to Wesleyan, as did Lamar County to visiting Heard County, while Bleckley County was handled in a doubleheader by Union County.

Treutlen County is seeded fourth in Class A public, and it visits top seed Schley County. Schley County eliminated Taylor County in the second round after dumping GMC in the first round. No. 6 Trion and No. 2 Charlton County are in the other semifinal.

And Tattnall Square is at home Monday after its two-game series win over Eagle’s Landing Christian, getting a break with ninth seed Calvary Day sweeping top seed Savannah Christian 3-1 and 5-3 on Wednesday.

The GISA baseball tournament is underway, Windsor getting an early start Thursday with a sweep of First Presbyterian Christian Academy, 2-0 and 13-3.

The Knights, who lost to Piedmont in last year's championship series, now visit Region 3-AA winner Crisp Academy in a rematch of a second-round meeting last year.
