Westside’s Zoe Jordan wins GHSA triple jump championship
Westside’s Zoe Jordan and Jeff Davis’ Morgan Carelock claimed the first GHSA individual track and field titles of the year for Middle Georgia on Thursday in Albany.
Jordan won the Class AAA triple jump, jumping 37 feet, 11 1/4 inches. She was 2 3/4 inches better than second-place finisher Alexus Shaw of Pierce County.
Carelock was the only high jumper in Class AA to clear 5-4, giving her gold in that event.
Field events in Class AAAAA, Class AAA and Class AA were contested Thursday, along with finals in selected distance events in all classes.
Washington County’s Shatrice Dixon finished second in the long jump for the lone second-place finish from Middle Georgia in Class AAA.
East Laurens’ Ja’Mya Canady was second in the triple jump in Class AA, while Jeff Davis’ Tristan Herndon was second in Class AA discus and Putnam County’s Cody Chandler was second in Class AA shot put.
In Class A public, where the only final of the day was in the 1,600, GMC’s Allie Kauzlarich placed second.
Rutland’s Breanca Davis scored in two events in Class AAA, finishing fifth in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump. Chandler and Herndon also scored in two events, with Chandler finishing sixth in the discus and Herndon placing eighth in the shot put.
The other classes will take part in field events Friday, with finals for sprints and middle-distance races slated for Saturday.
Qualifying also took place Thursday for sprints and middle distance races in the AAAAA, AAA and AA classifications.
First-place finishers from Middle Georgia in qualifying included the Warner Robins 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams and the Demons’ Cassondra Hall in the 100 and 200 in Class AAAAA, as well as Westside’s Iycis Hammock in the Class AAA 300 hurdles and Bleckley County’s Ellen Powell in the Class AA 800.
