Stratford boys soccer team routs Athens Christian

The Stratford soccer team had no problem in its GHSA Class A private school playoff opener as they crushed Athens Christian 10-0 on Thursday.

The game was called at the half because of the 10-goal lead rule. Zane Holliman scored four times in limited time on the field, while Jake Jamison added a hat trick for the Eagles. Holliman set the tone only 14 seconds into the game when he fought his way into the middle and scored on a brilliant header.

THREE WHO MATTERED

Holliman: The junior scored again in the eighth minute, then again in the 15th minute and added one more goal in the 28th minute before calling it a night.

Jamison: He scored two goals late in the half to help the Eagles get to the 10-0 lead.

Thomas Traynham: The senior assisted on two goals before finding the net in the 30th minute.

THEY SAID IT

Stratford head coach Ian Hayley on the benefits of an easy first-round playoff game: “We have had some games this year that we have come out very flat, but the early goal really got us going. We talked all week about the importance of enjoying every minute we are on the field, because the season is winding down and we are playing some great teams. I thought we got a great team performance and we had a great time playing the game.”

Traynham on wrapping up his home Stratford career: “It was on my mind all day because we really didn’t know anything about Athens Christian. I just wanted to make sure we played hard the entire game. I felt like we were the better team early, but we have had some games this year that I felt like we were the better team and we lost. After we got the lead, we just wanted to put it away.”

Holliman on playing for the Stratford the seniors: “We talked about it, and we wanted to give all of them one final great game on this field.”

Holliman on the overall attitude of his team: “The mood at practice has been great, and we feel like we are peaking right now. We know that it will be tough the rest of the way, but we know we can play with anyone in the state when we are playing good.”
