Peach County tennis teams double up with region titles
Peach County's tennis teams are making history again.
For the girls team this is nothing new. The four-time defending region champion Trojans finished with an undefeated regular season after beating Perry 4-1 on Friday.
"It's their hard work and perseverance and determination that puts us at that spot," head girls coach Ashley Dalton said of the team's GHSA Region 2-AAA title.
Although most of the boys season was played away from home, the Trojans brought home their first region championship in more than six years.
"We've been runner-up a few times, but this time, we put it all together," boys head coach Dallas Smith said.
The boys had a 6-2 regular season, but losing to Perry in their final regular-season matchup.
"Our team has kind of forged just a really good identity in tennis," Smith said.
While most of the boys singles are return players, the doubles teams are a "mixed bag," according to Smith. Seniors David Hill and Wyatt Robinson leads the boys singles players, and they both have been playing for Peach County since their freshman year.
"They've kind of come up, well grown up, playing tennis really from a young age, which really helps," Smith said.
The girls team offers the opposite dynamic as most of its players have been on the team. Jessica Estrada, the only senior on the girls team, has been playing No. 1 singles since Dalton took over three years ago. Dalton said she is looking forward to having most of the players back next season.
Although the two teams are different in their makeup this season, they practice against each other to improve their game.
"Our two teams work together really well," Smith said.
