High school notebook: Mount de Sales looking for new boys basketball head coach

Mount de Sales is looking for a new boys basketball head coach following the departure of Jim Massey.

The Cavaliers went 8-15 this season, 2-8 in GHSA Region 7A-A play. They started the season with six wins in their first nine games, but things slowed down after that, with the only region wins coming against Twiggs County and Tattnall Square.

Massey spent three seasons as Mount de Sales' head coach, going 10-14 in 2014-15 and 15-11 in 2013-14. He replaced Scott Wynn, who spent six years with the Cavaliers before taking over as head coach at Northside.

The Bibb County School District will offer free athletics physicals for middle school and high school student-athletes in April and May, according to a release from the district.

The physicals will be offered to students in grades 5-11 who are interested in participating in middle school and high school sports. The physicals, which will be conducted by Piedmont Sports Medicine, are a requirement for participation.

Paperwork will need to be completed by the student-athlete and a parent or guardian prior to the physical. That paperwork will be distributed at the schools.

Screenings will take place by high school zone, with screenings beginning at 5:30 p.m. each night. If a student-athlete can't attend the screening in his or her high school zone, then the screening can be completed at another school on its screening night or by the student-athlete's personal physician.

The screening schedule: Central (April 13), Southwest (April 19), Howard (April 21), Rutland (April 26), Westside (April 28) and Northeast (May 3).

For more information, contact the district athletics department at 765-8550.
