Saturday's Middle Georgia GHSA boys playoff capsules
Southwest DeKalb (Region 6, second, 24-5) at Warner Robins, 6 p.m.
Southwest DeKalb is a top-10 team that lost to powerhouse -- and Warner Robins victim in a quarterfinal last year -- Miller Grove by seven and eight and then by 28 in the region tournament. The other two losses are to Whitefield Academy and Morrow, both in December. Three Panthers combine for 41.4 points.
Next: Morrow/Allatoona winner, 4:45 p.m., Thursday, at Columbus State.
Jones County (Region 2, fourth, 16-12) at Mays (Region 6, third, 12-13), 5:30 p.m.
The only 3-4 matchup in the class pits a team that's 6-4 on the road against a team that's 5-2 at home. Eight Mays losses have been by single digits. The Greyhounds, who got a huge game from Javaughn Patterson against Camden County, have a much better drive this time around.
Next: Mundy's Mill/Cedar Shoals winner, 8:15 p.m., Thursday, at Columbus State.
Class AAAA
Mary Persons (Region 2, second, 17-11) at Grady (Region 6, first, 26-3), 5 p.m.
Grady was ranked one spot better than Upson-Lee at the end of the regular season and might have some matchup problems with the Bulldogs, who are only 4-6 on the road. Que Perkins and Cameron Holden are on a roll.
Next: Woodward/Westover winner, Feb. 28, at Columbus State.
Class AAA
Banks County (Region 7, third, 24-4) at Central (Region 2, first, 26-2), 4 p.m.
Central should have a serious battle against a team that's 13-3 away from home, including an 80-61 road win in the first round. Point guard Zez Steeple leads the Leopards, and Dylan Orr is a 1,000-point/1,000-rebound player.
Next: South Atlanta/Callaway winner, 4:45 p.m., Thursday, at Augusta.
Westside (Region 2, second, 22-6) at Calhoun (Region 6, first, 26-0), 5:30 p.m.
Calhoun lost in the second round a year ago, and the Yellow Jackets haven't been beaten since. They have some size and skill in 6-foot-4 Kaelan Riley and 6-5 Chapin Rierson, so Westside standout Khavon Moore will need plenty of help for the Seminoles to pull of the mjor upset.
Next: Jackson County/Jenkins winner, 4:45 p.m., Friday, at Augusta.
Class AA
Monticello (Region 4, second, 19-10) at Rabun County (Region 8, first, 16-12), 7 p.m.
The road team -- which has had quality games with bigger programs Jones County, Heritage and Luella, along with Class AA power Crawford County -- might be the favorite, although Rabun County is hot, winning four straight after a two-game losing streak.
Next: Greater Atlanta Christian/Dublin winner, 8:15 p.m., Thursday, at Georgia College.
Temple (Region 5, third, 22-5) at Crawford County (Region 4, first, 23-3), 6 p.m.
The Eagles hammered defending state champion Seminole County by 31, but Temple -- with 6-7 Peyton Applegate -- is strong. The Tigers are 4-7 on the road, but the road is very different -- and very loud -- in Roberta.
Next: Swainsboro/Holy Innocents winner, 8:15, Friday, at Georgia College.
Greater Atlanta Christian (Region 6, third, 17-9) at Dublin (Region 3, first, 24-4)
Dublin has won five in a row, with only one game closer than 12 points. The Irish have cracked 80 points 20 times this season and surpassed 100 three times. GAC scores more in the 50s and 60s.
Next: Monticello/Rabun County winner, 8:15 p.m., Thursday, at Georgia College.
Class A-Private
(Includes seeding rather than region tournament finish)
FPD (Region 7, No. 16, 14-10) at Greenforest (Region 5, No. 1, 26-2), 3:30 p.m.
Greenforest beat Stratford 63-23 in the second round last year after opening with a 103-31 win over Southwest Atlanta.
Next: Tattnall Square/Southwest Atlanta winner, 4:45 p.m., Thursday, at Kennesaw State.
Walker (Region 6, No. 13, 18-8) at Stratford (Region 7, No. 4, 19-5), 4 p.m.
The Wolverines win more close games than they lose. Their average loss is by 16.4 points. Stratford is hot after a superb region tournament.
Next: Christian Heritage/North Cobb Christian winner, Thursday, 8:15 p.m., at Kennesaw State.
Tattnall Square (Region 7, No. 9, 17-9) at Southwest Atlanta Christian (Region 5, No. 8, 18-8), 6 p.m.
The alma mater of Dwight Howard played in a large region that had plenty of weak teams. The Trojans have been up and down the past month, going 4-5, with good wins along the way and four losses by 11 points or less.
Next: FPD/Greenforest winner, 4:45 p.m., Thursday, at Kennesaw State.
Class A-Public
Stewart County (Region 1, No. 16, 13-10) at Treutlen (Region 3, No. 1, 24-3), 6 p.m.
Treutlen has pretty much been a top-five team all season, reaching No. 1. The Vikings were a four seed a year ago, while Stewart County didn't make the playoffs but did have a winning record.
Next: Central/Hawkinsville winner, 4:45 p.m., Thursday, at Valdosta State.
Central-Talbotton (Region 4, No. 9, 17-9) at Hawkinsville (Region 4, No. 8, 16-9)
Central won both games in region play, by five and eight points. Neither made the postseason a year ago, both going 11-14.
Next: Stewart County/Treutlen winner, 4:45 p.m., Thursday, at Valdosta State.
Atkinson County (Region 2, No. 12, 18-7) at Wilkinson County (Region 7, No. 5, 22-6)
The Warriors lost three home games, albeit to playoff teams Warner Robins (Class AAAAA), Swainsboro (Class AA) and region rival Tattnall Square. And their 13-game winning streak was broken by Stratford in the region tournament finale. Might not be good news for Atkinson County.
Next: Lincoln County/Randolph-Clay winner, 8:15 p.m., Thursday, at Valdosta State.
Marion County (Region 4, No. 10, 15-13) at Hancock Central (Region 7, No. 7, 21-6)
Hancock Central finished third on its home court in the region tournament, rebounding with a 19-point win over Tattnall. The Bulldogs might go the bench pretty early.
Next: Wilcox County/Taylor County winner, 8:15 p.m., Friday, at Valdosta State.
Wilcox County (Region 2, No. 15, 14-12) at Taylor County (Region 4, No. 2, 20-7).
Wilcox County is back in the postseason, but the Patriots travel to Butler, where the Vikings are 11-2 at home and anxious to make some postseason noise for the first time in a few years.
Next: Marion County/Hancock Central winner, 8:15 p.m., Friday, at Valdosta State.
